About the Creator

Cristina Thurland

Born and raised on St. Croix, I grew up surrounded by bright colors, a musical dialect, and rich flavors. My parents possess the talent of creating, which they passed on to me. My mom has designed cultural wear for pageant contestants and can sew anything with fabric. My dad can build a house from the ground up and can fashion anything out of wood. I choose to make art via photography, craft projects, and graphic design.

I created Frangipani Pins because I wanted to see more representation of Virgin Islands culture in the button/enamel pin industry. When I was in college, everyone had button pins on their backpacks, portraying their musical interests, home state, and favorite quotes. But back then it was extremely hard to find pins, keychains, even stickers representing the Virgin Islands beyond the image of our flag. I wanted the option to proudly display my heritage in a fun and unique way. As a Virgin Islander, I’m excited to share this endeavor with my community and the world.
